Leader: Today we are going to learn about the golden rule
Puppet: (enters excitedly) The golden ruler? Where? I just love working with tools, but a golden ruler? Boy oh boy I
would like to see that. That must have cost a fortune. I wonder if my dad has a golden ruler in his tool box?
Maybe that’s why he never wants me to play with his tools. I wonder if he has a golden measuring tape too!
Leader: Not a golden ruler silly. We are talking about the golden rule.
Puppet: Oh, no golden ruler? No golden measuring tape? No tools? Bummer.
Leader: Well, the golden rule is used to measure things so I guess you could say that it is a kind of tool.
Puppet: Really? That’s got my attention now.
Leader: Yes, we use the golden rule to measure or decide how we should treat others.
Puppet: I’m confused. What exactly is the golden ruler, uh, I mean rule?
Leader: The golden rule is to do unto others the way you would have them do unto you.
Puppet: Do unto others the way that I would have them do unto me?
Leader: Yes, we should always treat others the way we would like to be treated.
Puppet: That sounds like a good rule. If rules could be gold, I would think that one would be golden. The world would
really be a nice place if everyone only treated other people the way they like to be treated. Most people like to be
treated nice, so they would treat everyone nice. Most people like to be told the truth, so nobody would ever lie.
The golden rule is a great rule!
Leader: It really is puppet. Before we do something to somebody, or say something to somebody, we need to stop and
think how we would like to be talked to or how we would like to be treated.
Puppet: Hey, this golden rule about treating others the way that we would like to be treated kind of reminds me of what
Jesus said.
Leader: What’s that puppet?
Puppet: Jesus says in Mathew 22:37&38 to “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with
all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as
yourself.”
Leader: That is exactly right! If you love God with all your heart, soul, and mind, then you will love your neighbor as
yourself and follow the golden rule because Jesus tells us if we love him we will obey his commandments.
Puppet: You’re smart! I am telling you that you are smart because I like people to tell me that I am smart when I know
something important.
Leader: Thank you puppet.
Puppet: And thank you for telling me about the golden rule. Bye boys and girls!
Leader: Bye Puppet!
